2009 NEWPORT PARADE
The
club once again participated in the Newport Field Days Parade this year. A float
was prepared that showed off some of the clubs equipment. Several of our junior
members rode the float and treated the children in the crowd with candy.
MEMBERSHIPS
Membership renewals for the 09-10 season are
now available. Please help support the club by renewing your membership today.
Encourage your friends to join! The success of the club and the condition of the
trails depend on the support of our members. Memberships are $25.00 for both
individual and family. Memberships can be done on line through the New York
State Snowmobile Association Website
www.nysnowassoc.org (a link can be found on our site). If you are unable to
complete your membership online please feel free to contact Murph or Dean for
applications and vouchers.
Please remember; the West Canada Trailriders
Snowmobile Club of Newport is YOUR local club. We need YOUR support in order to
grow. There is only so much that can be done by the current handful of dedicated
members that are keeping the club going. It is our intention to continue to
improve and expand our trail system, to work towards the establishment of a
clubhouse, and to make this a family and friend filled organization that will
enhance the sport of snowmobiling for all those involved. These goals cannot be
accomplished without the physical and financial support of members. Please
consider becoming an active member this year. A few hours per year from each
member can make all the difference in the world.
MEETINGS
Club
meetings are held on the 3rd Monday of each month, 7:00 pm, at the
home of Dean Jones on Summit Rd. just outside of Middleville. All members are
encouraged to join us. Topics for the next meeting will be trail closure issues
and trail maintenance issues, among others. Feel free to contact an officer if
you have thoughts or ideas but are unable to attend the meeting.
TRAIL MAINTENANCE
Trail
Maintenance is needed. Please contact one of the officers with any time you have
available to help out. There is plenty of work to be done and we could use some
help this year. Trails need signing and brushing. Culverts and bridges need to
be repaired.
ANNUAL CLUB RAFFLE AND
TICKET HOLDER PARTY
On September 26th the West
Canada Trailriders held the annual raffle and ticket holder party. This year’s
event was held at the Adirondack Legion in Cold Brook and welcomed the return of
the band Stage Road. Amy and company put on another spectacular meal. Many
thanks to the folks that volunteered their time to organize and work the event,
sell tickets, etc. We couldn’t do it without you. We would also like to thank
all the folks that purchased tickets again this year. It was a wonderful event
and we look forward to holding it each year.
We currently have the 2010 Raffle tickets
available for anyone that would like to purchase early and reserve a special
number! Contact any of the officers with your request.
ATV’S ON TRAILS
Over the
summer we have been contacted by several landowners over the use of ATV’S on the
trails that run through their property. Please remember that the trail system is
NOT open to ATV use and that you need permission from any landowner before using
their property for anything during the off season. This issue is critical to our
trails remaining open. Landowners allow us to have and maintain snowmobile
trails on their land and have every right to deny that usage. Please be
considerate of their rights and their property.
SPECIAL THANKS TO
LANDOWNERS
Remember folks, most of our
trail system would not exist if it wasn’t for the kindness and generosity of the
Landowners that allow snowmobile trails to cross their property. Please be
respectful and let them know we appreciate it. Be mindful of the signs and
fences that designate where we are allowed to ride. Stay on the trails, do not
leave trash behind!
TRAILRIDERS WEBSITE
The website is still up and
running. Input from members would be fantastic. There is a place for pictures,
classifieds, stories, and just about anything else snowmobile related.

MEMBERSHIPS
Membership renewals for the 05-06 season have remained below normal
this year. Considering the cards Mother Nature has dealt us this year it is to be
expected. Encourage your friends to join! Remind them that the two tier registration
system begins this coming year and they must be a member of a club to take advantage of
the discounted registration fee. The success of the club and the condition of the trails
depend on the support of our members. The need for grooming has been low this year due to
the lack of snow but the club still incurs many expenses and much work still needs to be
done. Individual memberships remain at $20.00 and Family memberships are $25.00.
Membership dues includes a $5.00 membership to the New York State Snowmobile Association.
Checks can be made payable to WEST CANADA TRAILRIDERS Inc. Please fill out the following

be wet spots, downed trees, and other hazards on the trails.

NYSSA
NEWS
RAFFLE - The New York State Snowmobile Association is currently
holding their annual Super Raffle. The drawing is to be held at the NYSSA

Currently Murph and Dean have tickets on hand at a cost of $5.00 each.
********** IMPORTANT
INFORMATION **********
State Budget / State Trail Fund There is currently a proposal
to sweep $2.5 million from the state trail fund to the general fund. The NYSSA with the
support of the member clubs is vehemently opposing this proposal. A letter writing
campaign has begun and we need to support NYSSA as much as possible on this. Statewide
registrations remain low this year and now a proposal to sweep $2.5 million off the top
will have a definite affect on the ability of clubs to maintain trails this coming year. A
copy of the opposition letter has been emailed to those members that have an email address
on file with WCT along with a fax number for Senator Sewards office and contact
information for Assemblyman Butler. Enclosed in this mailing is also a copy of this
letter. Please take a moment to sign this letter and fax or mail it as soon as possible.
Timing is critical on this issue as the Legislature is on break until February 27th.
All letters should be mailed or faxed before then. Additional information and updates can
be found on the state website at www.nyssnowassoc.org

TRAIL
NEWS:
The
trail system is now officially open and grooming has begun! Please remember to watch out
for early season hazards. Fallen trees, wet spots, rocks and other hazards are likely to
be found until we get more snow cover. If you encounter any trail hazards please contact
one of the club officers. You will also find some slight changes this year. On trail C4I
between Newport Rd and Farrell road you will find that a bridge had to be moved and the
trail slightly rerouted due to some very busy beavers building a dam and flooding an area
that the trail used to go through. You will also find that there is a slight change in
where trail C4I crosses Newport Rd near the Newport Town Garage.

THIS
NEWSLETTER:
This
newsletter is being sent to current members as well as those past members from the last
several years in an attempt to bring back folks that have let their memberships lapse.
Please remember; the West Canada Trailriders Snowmobile Club of Newport IS YOUR local
club. We need YOUR support in order to grow. There is only so much that can be done by the
current handful of dedicated members that are keeping the club going. It is our intention
to continue to improve and expand our trail system, to work towards the establishment of a
clubhouse, and to make this a family and friend filled organization that will enhance the
sport of snowmobiling for all those involved. These goals cannot be accomplished without
the physical and financial support of members.
WHY
BECOME A MEMBER?
On occasion we are
asked Why should I join a club? and Whats in it for me? Well each and every one of us has our own reasons
for joining. However many snowmobilers dont understand or care what it takes to keep
the trails open and maintained therefore dont feel the need to join. The simple fact
that you are receiving and reading this newsletter shows that you care enough to join.
Here are some suggestions given to me by fellow sledders when asked why one should join.
Feel free to use them with friends, family, or anyone that feels joining isnt
important. A few might even be appropriate when relaxing at a local watering hole and
listening to a non member complain about imperfect trails.
- What is the
function of the club
- Gain landowner
permission for trails 85% of trail mileage is on private land!
- Applications and

over 146,000 sleds registered in New York State
- There are more
then 9,000 miles of corridor and secondary trails groomed and maintained in New York by
over 170 clubs.
- In the past year
groomers in New York donated over 34,500 hours of their time and groomed 172,560 miles of
trails
at a speed of 5-8 miles per hour!
- On average it
costs nearly $500 per mile annually to groom and maintain every mile of trail you ride.
- Registration fees
only pay for approximately 50% of the cost of maintaining trails. Club and NYSSA
fundraisers and memberships are necessary to raise the balance.
- Only about 25% of riders belong to a club and NYSSA!
- United We Trail.
Divided We Fail. Join a Club and NYSSA today!
Additionally, effective 2006 there will be a
two tier registration fee. Snowmobile registration fees will increase to $100.00 unless
you belong to a club in which case they will remain at $45.00 per sled.
TRAIL
MAINTENANCE

Club members have been busy this year with several big projects.
Several members along with the help of Ron Salm and his welding equipment and Jason
Bartlett with his Excavator constructed a new bridge on the Bowie road portion of trail
C4I near the Schuyler Town Park. This was a large undertaking that took several days worth
of volunteer work and an abundance of materials. A new bridge has also been constructed on
trail C4I between Newport and Poland. This is also a fairly good size bridge that was a
big improvement. Thanks to the help of some very busy Beavers, we also needed to
reconstruct the Bridge on trail C4I between Newport Rd and Farrell Rd. The trail through
that area had to be slightly rerouted to go around an area that has been flooded by a
family of Beavers. Many thanks go out to Charlie Moody for his help with supplies and the
use of his Bulldozer. Trail signing and brushing has also begun.

Work that still needs to be accomplished includes the installation of
a culvert pipe on trail C4I, more brushing and signing and some mechanical work still
needs to be done to our Bombardier groomer. Any member that can help with any of these
projects over the next several weekends is encouraged to call one of the officers to let
us know.
ANNUAL
CLUB RAFFLE AND TICKET HOLDER PARTY

On September 24th the West Canada Trailriders once
again held the annual raffle and ticket holder party at the Middleville Fire Hall. The
band Knight Ryders provided the entertainment. A fantastic meal was prepared by Julie and
Amy. The club would like to extend its appreciation for all those that helped out
that day to make the party a huge success. Brian, Kris, Ron, Mike, Dean, Winger, Sue,
Bill, Murph, Mandy, Ashley, and James just to name a few, and of coarse lets not
forget our bartenders that kept everything in order Kris, Lisa and Steph.

A Chinese auction was also held with the help of Shelly. The Ace of
Diamonds Mine, The West Canada Sport Shop, Moodys Polaris, Walmart, Sue McKerrow,
Sloans, Summit Hill Liquors, Werthmans Market, Carmellas, Kuyahoora,
Autenriths Furniture, and Summit Hill Auto were among the many friends and businesses that
made donations to the chinese auction.
Congratulations to Connie Smith and the rest of the raffle winners
see you next year!
PARADE
TIME
The club once
again participated in the Newport Field Days Parade this Year. A Float was prepared by
Dean, Brian, Julie, Mandy, and Ron that showed off some of the clubs equipment. Julie,
Amy, Kris, Mandy, Kaleigh, Erica, Rebecca, and Nelly rode the float and treated the
children in the crowd with candy. They also treated the Judges with snowballs.
We were proud to hear that the float won 2nd place in the Best Appearing
Float category!

EQUIPMENT

This year we should all be enjoying trail conditions that are better
then ever thanks to the clubs recent purchase of a Piston Bully PB130. This acquisition
should allow for the trails to be groomed more often due to the time savings we should see
over our other equipment.
Another equipment decision made this year was to sell our 2000
Bearcat. Anyone interested in this sled should contact one of the officers for more
information. Sales price is $2,900.
NEW
TRAIL FUNDED
Effective
this year we are receiving additional funding for trail miles on trail C7A. This trail
connects from trail C4I near Brown Road over to Windfall Road where Bull Road, Mowers Road,
and Carder Lane Road can be used to gain access to East Herkimer Trail C4A to Kast Bridge.
Trail C7A is a work in progress that we hope to improve and expand upon so that road
travel can be eliminated entirely.
MEETINGS
Club
meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, 7:00 pm, at the home of
Bill Garlock in Newport. All members are encouraged to join us. Topics for the next
meeting will be trail conditions and fund raising ideas among others. Feel free to contact
an officer if you have thoughts or ideas but are unable to attend the meeting.
